The leather jacket is so back!

It’s been a long winter. Now that we are officially in spring, our wardrobes are buzzing full of light and colors. It’s time to put our coats, jumpers and woolen gloves away until the next winter. Leather jackets, prominent actors of season transitions, are complementary staples of our closets. That leather jacket icon was etched in memories in time from wild west cowboys to Harley Davidson fans, from punks and rockers to even policemen uniforms with different styles. Don’t blink the fact that idols like John Travolta, James Dean and Marlon Brando have greatly contributed to the cultivation of leather jackets.

‘Bomber’ jackets designed for protecting war pilots from cold in 1900’s and biker style for minimizing injuries by bikes are the main sources of contemporary modern designs. When looked at 2010 Spring/Summer collections, it’s clear that many renowned designers manufactured leather jackets in different styles, models and patterns. It is possible to find any leather jacket in any style: Wide collar, zippy, quilted, button, stiff collar, punch collar… etc.     International brands, Roberto Cavalli, D&G, Hermes and Louis Vuitton in particular, design stylish ones. My favorite Turkish brands for leather jackets are Que in Network stores and Tween. For moderate prices, I recommend you to visit Zara, Topman and H&M.

How to choose a leather jacket:

  • Be careful that the jacket closely fits you. A loose jacket will show you neither fit nor elegant.
  • For a street culture or a more alternative look, a wide collar, side zip and double breast leather jacket will be the right choice. If you are a ‘latest trend’ type, prefer the punch models. You can combine your leather jacket with printed t-shirts and comfortable jeans.
  • For an elegant style, you should prefer crew, stiff or narrow neck models. You can wear a closely fitting, single color shirt; a slim tie and skinny cloth pants.
  • Jackets of the season are manufactured in thinner leathers. By this way, you can wear more staples under the jacket. For a sportive look, wear a plaid shirt and leave it open. Under your shirt, wear a long sleeve hood t-shirt. For perfecting your style, leather jackets and cargo pants are great choices.
  • Leather jackets are already eye-catching. So, I recommend you not to have another leather accessory on you.

The leather jacket has been a firm fashion favorite since World War I. However, never have so many variations on the theme of bomber jackets especially been seen on the runways than in 2010.
